Q: What do I need to license a driver to use with my device?
Contact our sales department to get all appropriate paperwork and information required. The items that we require before releasing a Driver for your product include:
1. Paperwork Licensing Contract, Custom Software Authorization, and Software Licensing Checklist.
2. Sample Product for in-house testing purposes (quantity TBD)
3. Payment of Non Recurring Engineering fee and Royalty Deposit
Q: What are Vendor and Device IDs?
These are hex based numbers programmed into the eeprom of your device that our Driver will look for when it installs to support your device. The default numbers (USB 2.0 for example, host controller IDs NEC VID 1033 or Intel M/B VID 8086) can not be used. You tell us the VID and DID on the custom software authorization and usually your engineer can help you obtain these numbers.
Q: Will the Trial driver work for my device?
The Trial driver is programmed to work for any device but it times out at the end of each month, so you will be forced to re-download it from our OrangeWare website.
Q: How soon can I get my driver?
OrangeWare releases a driver update twice a month, on the 1st and 15th. In order to be included in a release, you must have all the necessary paperwork, payment, and product in to our offices by closing ONE WEEK before the release date.
Q: What is the NRE?
A: NRE stands for Non Recurring Engineering fee that we charge to engineer our driver with the Vendor and Device IDs from your product so that our Driver will support your device.
Q: My company has several devices that require the Driver. Will I have to pay the Non Recurring Engineering fee (NRE) multiple times?
When we create your driver initially, we can add in IDs for as many devices as you can supply for no extra charge. The NRE fee is required each time OrangeWare alters the code for our driver in order to add in additional Vendor/Device IDs. You can add as many sub Vendor and sub Device IDs as you want at one time for the price of one NRE.
Q: Will our device be included in improvements to the Driver?
Once you purchase a Driver from OrangeWare, you will be included in all future releases of the Driver.
Q: Do you offer product support?
If problems or bugs are encountered in the future (for instance, when a new version of Windows or the Mac OS is released), OrangeWare will research and make adjustments to the Driver so that your device will remain functional in a changing world.
Q: How does the Royalty Deposit and sliding scale of royalty fees work as applied to volume?
The Royalty Deposit is paid in advance of release of the driver and is not refunded if it does not eventually get depleted from shipping product. For example, the sliding scale of per-unit prices for USB 2.0 works this way: All units after, 75K, and 200K shipped will be at the lower price and the price for the previously shipped items is not affected once they have been paid.
Q: How do you keep track of products shipped?
We will send you a monthly statement showing how much of your royalty deposit has been used and you will reply with your units shipped or the previous month. Once your Royalty Deposit has been depleted, we will start invoicing you for additional units shipped on a monthly basis.
Q: What if my company wants to create devices for other OEMs? Can I have their names display in the device manager?
The driver works by looking at the Sub Vendor and Sub Device IDs in the eeprom of your device. Each unique Sub Vendor/Device ID combination will have one custom company and product name that will show up in the device manager. You are welcome to submit as many combinations of I.D.s as you want when you initially get the driver to release and OrangeWare will make sure each combination of IDs shows a different company name to keep your customers happy. However, if you wait until a later time and want to add a new companys information into the driver (which requires adding a new Vendor/Device ID), then you will have to re-pay the NRE
